DRIVER EDUCATION THEORY

Students gain awareness of the driving task and the responsibilities that accompany it. They demonstrate knowledge of traffic laws and regulations that help provide safe and efficient patterns. Students understand the impact that natural forces and conditions have concerning driving. They learn to identify hazardous conditions and react appropriately to avoid or minimize problems. Students develop an attitude of safe, courteous, and defensive driving.
Southwest Wisconsin Technical College is pleased to offer Driver Education in two formats to meet the needs of all students: traditional and online

Traditional classes are offered at area schools within the Southwest Wisconsin Technical College district during the school day with qualified instructors.

Online classes are an alternative to the traditional classroom. Students enrolling in the online program are offered the same information as the traditional program, but will work at their own pace within the semester. Study materials and assignments are viewed through a password-protected course management system called Blackboard. For a glimpse of the online Driver's Education course, you can access a sample course going to: http://swtc.blackboard.com . You will be prompted to enter a username and password. Key in the word demo for both the username and password. On the welcome screen, click on the Drive Right Theory (Demo Course) listed under "Courses you are enrolled in." On the following screen, click on the buttons on the left of the screen (Syllabus, Staff Information, etc.) to view a sample course.

DRIVER EDUCATION-BEHIND THE WHEEL

Students put driver education theory into practice with behind-the-wheel instruction and observation of fellow drivers in a driver training vehicle. Students perform driving tasks and demonstrate the responsibilities that accompany them. Students obey traffic laws and regulations and develop safe and efficient driving patterns. Students experience the impact of natural forces and conditions on the driving environment, and they learn to identify hazardous conditions and react appropriately to avoid or minimize problems. Students practice safe, courteous, and defensive driving techniques.

DRIVING FOR ADULTS

Individualized instruction on the proper and safest operation of motor vehicle on the roadway.

MOTORCYCLE DRIVER EDUCATION
 
Course Number 42-816-404
 
The Basic Rider Motorcycle Safety course is tailored more to the needs of the beginning riders, but can also benefit those who have some experience astride a bike. Approved by the Motorcycle Safety Foundation, this 16-hour course includes classroom and on-cycle training designed to make you a knowledgeable and safe motorcyclist. Participants will learn how to safely shift, turn, and brake, as well as other riding techniques.

COMMERCIAL DRIVERS LICENSE

Preparing a student to pass the written tests to get a Commercial Drivers License with any of the six endorsements.

COMMERCIAL DRIVER LICENSE BEHIND THE WHEEL

Students observe and perform pre-trip inspections of truck and truck-trailer combinations, review safety procedures for operating large trucks and truck-trailer combinations, and operate vehicles in a safe manner on private property and on public highways.

DRIVER EDUCATION - VAN

The State of Wisconsin requires all drivers of passenger vans which can carry twelve (12) passengers or more, that are owned by the State, to complete a driver's training program to improve the drivers's awareness of the potential hazards of driving a large vehicle and the driver's ability to handle a large vehicle on the road.

SAFETY FOR FORKLIFT DRIVER-OSHA

Students realize the importance of safety when driving forklifts. They learn to apply OSHA standards to work situations, build safety consciousness, and avoid dangerous situations.
