LPN REFRESHER - FOUNDATIONS OF NURSING PRACTICE

Students identify health issues emerging in response to changes in health care, including changes that are currently taking place within the health care domain. Students increase their understanding of how these changes will have an impact on nursing by completing units on health care delivery systems, legal and ethical issues, psychosocial and cultural needs, communication, documentation, and nursing process.
Prerequisites:
Hold an active Wisconsin LPN license, or an inactive license with Board of Nursing recommendation to complete the LPN Refresher course.

LPN REFRESHER - CLINICAL SKILLS

Students review responses to changes in their client's health care needs, using a wide range of techniques to determine a client's usual state of health (baseline), or signs to indicate a change in their physiological and physiological function. Students demonstrate knowledge of basic clinical skills, basic physical assessment, medication administration, electrolyte and fluid balance, nutrition needs, elimination concerns, skin integrity/wound care, and infection control.
Prerequisites:
Hold an active Wisconsin LPN license, or an inactive license with Board of Nursing recommendation to complete a LPN Refresher course.

LPN REFRESHER - INTERVENTIONS

Students practice basic assessment and clinical decision making skills necessary to care for clients with specific health care needs. Students demonstrate activities and interventions that promote health and manage client care in relation to comfort, rest, activity, and mobility needs; care of the older adult; management of client care; review of surgical care; diagnostic and laboratory testing; and basic knowledge of intravenous therapy.
Prerequisites:
Hold an active Wisconsin LPN license, or an inactive license with Board of Nursing recommendation to complete a LPN Refresher course.

LPN REFRESHER - CLINICAL PRACTICUM

Students apply basic nursing knowledge, demonstrate therapeutic communication techniques, gather client data, review specific health care needs, and demonstrate basic clinical skills with the assistance of a preceptor. Students identify the setting (hospital, nursing home, etc.) in which they will perform their clinical practicum and identify a preceptor to assist in this process.
Prerequisites:
Completion of LPN Refresher theory courses:
Foundations of Nursing Practice (10-543-150),
Clinical Skills, (10-543-151),
Interventions (10-543-152).
Hold an active Wisconsin LPN license, or a limited license with Board of Nursing recommendation to complete a LPN Refresher course.
Hold current Healthcare Provider CPR certification.
Complete a physical exam,
Provide documentation of a recent two-step TB skin test,
Meet health requirements as approved by the College Health Educator.
Students are responsible for ALL costs associated with meeting these requirements.
Meet caregiver background check requirements.
Provide proof of personal liability insurance for practice.
Qualified to perform functional abilities in providing care at the LPN level.

RN REFRESHER - LEGAL/ETHICAL RESPONSIBILITIES

Students review basic concepts in nursing practice, such as legal and ethical issues, roles of nursing, standards of care, and theories of nursing, licensing, and health promotion and prevention interventions. Students demonstrate understanding of these basic concepts essential to enhancing the safe and professional practice of the Registered Nurse in diverse health care environments.

RN REFRESHER-MANAGEMENT OF ASSESSMENT & CLINICAL SKILLS

Students review physical assessment responsibilities of the Registered Nurse, effective and efficient management of intravenous therapy, safe administration of medications via various routes, and surgical care. Students research the Internet and read professional journals to supplement course content.

RN REFRESHER-LEADERSHIP & MANAGEMENT OF DISEASE PROCESSES

Students examine disease processes and related nursing care. In addition, students review the principles of leadership, management, supervision, and delegation as it relates to the Registered Nurse role. Students identify quality improvement methods and research professional journals and the Internet to supplement course content.

Students demonstrate knowledge and skills in the following areas: measuring blood pressure; obtaining vital signs of pediatric clients; admissions and discharge of clients; preoperative and postoperative care of clients; and supportive care of clients with IVs, clients receiving oxygen, and clients with casts or in traction. Assigned clinical hours provide the student an opportunity for skill application in the hospital setting.

LPN TO RN TRANSITION

LPN to RN Student Transition is designed to validate prior learning and update/enhance the student's knowledge. This course facilitates transition from the role of Practical Nurse to that of a student preparing for the role of Registered Nurse. This course will be offered in the summer prior to start of the second year of the ADN program.
