Building Trades - Carpentry

             

Building Trades-Carpentry is a one-year technical diploma program designed to prepare students for job-entry employment in the construction of residential and commercial structures.

The program will emphasize knowledge and skill development in building layout, rough and finish carpentry, estimating, blueprint reading, jobsite safety and health, math, communications, human relations, quality, and customer service.


Career Opportunities
The U.S. Department of Labor and the Wisconsin Department of Workforce Development statistics show that carpenters will continue to be in strong demand as both one of the top 30 occupations with the most annual openings and occupations with the most employed. Local job market data also supports the need for entry-level carpenters who have a good foundational background of knowledge and skills along with a desire to work. Carpenters may work alone or for small or large contractors. They may specialize in certain aspects of the trade such as rough or finish carpentry, remodeling, or repair work. They may build residential, agricultural, and/or commercial buildings.

Program Outcomes
At the completion of this program, graduates will be able to:
  • Read blueprints for technical information
  • Estimate the material necessary to complete a building project
  • Use hand and power tools safely and efficiently
  • Plan work to efficiently use time and material
  • Work as a productive team member
  • Frame various buildings
  • Perform finish carpentry skills
  • Select appropriate building materials
  • Identify and correct job hazards for a safe work environment
  • Demonstrate ability to perform basic first aid and CPR
  • Use reading, writing and listing skills to express ideas effectively
  • Apply occupational math concepts in building related problems
  • Demonstrate professional responsibility at the work site
Program Basics
  • Technical diploma, requiring a minimum of one year to complete.
  • Day classes.
  • High school articulation courses accepted.
  • Financial aid available.
  • Classes start in August.
Program Admission Requirements
  • Complete required assessment testing.
  • Complete the application form.
  • Interview with counselor.
  • Pay a $30 nonrefundable application fee.
  • Submit high school and any post-secondary transcripts.
  • Acquire safety glasses, steel toed shoes, hearing protection, and hard hat.
  • Students may re-apply to be admitted to a program for which they initially do not meet the Student Academic Achievement Plan (SAAP) criteria after they follow the additional courses and alternate program sequence prescibed for them.
