When David Nelson arrived in Fennimore in 1968, there was no welding shop, no building—just a cement floor in a hayfield and a promise. At 89 years old, Nelson still recalls those early days. “They told me there’d be a building up by the time I got here,” he said. “When I showed up, the director pointed to a cement slab and said, ‘Here’s where your shop will be.’”

A press release, dated July 9, 1968, announced Nelson’s hiring. “As an instructor in the full-time welding course, beginning in September, Nelson will place major emphasis on the development of manipulative s#SWTCProuduo; it stated.

This is SO awesome! I tell people all the time, my Dad was one of the first teachers at the vocational school!

My husband Dan took auto/tractor mechanic in 1969 but also had welding classes. He said his class had to help put lockers in at least one of the buildings

I love learning about the early days of Southwest Tech - I hope this becomes a regular feature!

Wow! I was STUDENT SERVICES ADMINISTRATIOR back then!

Rex Duvall was a close friend mentor! Great article!

I remember those days. They got it done through adversity

Thank u for ur service

I was in the class of 74-75. Don Dimpfl and Dick Tupta were instructors.

High school students from throughout our district were on campus today, participating in the Graphic and Web Design Career Exploration Event. The high school students helped judge t-shirt designs produced by our first-year students.

They also designed and printed their own t-shirts, with assistance from our students and instructors, Erin Kerkoff and Katie Anderson. It was a great day!

Thank you to everyone who participated!
