Garmendia, a Business Management student from Darlington, Wisconsin, will represent Southwest Tech and its students at statewide events and activities throughout the year. The WTCS State Ambassador program highlights students who demonstrate determination, leadership and a passion for education.

Originally from Honduras, Garmendia came to the United States at age 15. He graduated from Darlington High School in 2024 and enrolled at Southwest Tech the following year. Today, the 20-year-old balances full-time college coursework with a full-time job while working toward his degree, a reflection of the determination and resilience that has shaped his path. He is also a member of the college’s Global Club.

Garmendia said his experience as an immigrant shaped his determination to succeed and to help others see what is possible through education. “What motivates me to be a successful student is the opportunity to turn challenges into growth and to inspire others along the way,” he said. “I came to this country completely alone, without parents, siblings or anyone to guide me. I didn’t know English, I didn’t know the culture, and I didn’t understand the language, but I refused to give up.”

The supportive environment at Southwest Tech played a major role in Garmendia’s decision to attend the college. “I chose Southwest Tech because it is a place where I can truly grow and become the person I am meant to be,” he said. “As an immigrant, I have faced challenges that could have held me back, but here I have felt supported every step of the way through bilingual resources that make learning possible and meaningful.”

He said the encouragement from instructors and staff has made a lasting impact on his education.

“Every instructor I’ve met inspires me to push myself further, and I love learning from each of them,” said Garmendia. “Southwest Tech feels like home, and every day here makes me stronger, more capable and more determined to make the most of every opportunity.”

Garmendia plans to graduate from Southwest Tech’s Business Management program in May 2027. After completing his degree, he hopes to build a career in business leadership and eventually become a manager or business owner. “My goal is to help people grow and encourage them to believe in themselves,” he said. “No matter where you come from or what language you speak, you can succeed if you work hard and stay determined.”

As a WTCS State Student Ambassador, Garmendia will share his story with students, educators and community leaders, representing both Southwest Tech and the opportunities available through technical college education.
