Clay target team claims conference title
Fennimore -
Southwest Wisconsin Technical College’s Clay Target Team capped off another successful spring season by winning its conference in the USA College Clay Target League. The title continues a tradition of strong performances and steady program growth.
The spring roster featured 15 student-athletes, a smaller group than the fall season due to graduations, internships, and program completion timelines. Despite the smaller roster, the Chargers earned first place in Conference Five, which included seven colleges from Wisconsin and surrounding states. “We won our conference by quite a bit,” said Matt Schneider, Southwest Tech Clay Target coach and advisor. “We had top male shooter, second-place male shooter, and second-place female shooter in the conference. Overall, it was a really successful season.”

Individual honors included conference champion Eli Muckler, from Lone Rock, a recent graduate of the Criminal Justice Program and Law Enforcement Academy, and runner-up Jordan Bomkamp, an Agronomy student from Muscoda. Maya Schroeder, from Portage, a Nursing graduate, earned second place among female competitors following a tiebreaker.
Schneider and fellow coach Dan Imhoff, Southwest Tech, executive director of facilities, safety and security, credited much of the team’s success to the strength of local high school clay target programs throughout southwest Wisconsin. “We get a lot of solid competitors out of area high schools,” said Schneider. “Southwest Wisconsin has some really strong programs, and we’re fortunate to have those students continue their shooting careers here.”
Imhoff added that the program’s depth has improved significantly over the years. “Our squads from top to bottom have gotten stronger,” he said. “The first couple years were a challenge, but now we have strong depth throughout the team.”
The coaches are especially excited about the future of the program, noting that next year’s incoming class may be the strongest group of female shooters the team has ever recruited.
In addition to collegiate competition, Southwest Tech recently hosted its fifth annual high school invitational at the Muscoda Sportsman’s Club. The event attracted approximately 360 competitors from 35 teams across Wisconsin and neighboring states.
Imhoff and Schneider will next assist with the Wisconsin State High School Clay Target League state skeet and trap shooting tournaments this spring.
