Golf team cracks top 10 at national tournament

The Southwest Wisconsin Technical College Golf Team finished ninth out of 16 teams at the recent NJCAA (National Junior College Athletic Association) national competition. The tournament was held June 3-6 at the Chautauqua Golf Club in New York.

The team got off to a difficult start during the first two days. “We posted our two highest rounds of the season and that put us way off pace,” said Scott Kennedy, coach and Golf Course Management instructor. “We then played well and were able to secure a top 10 finish, ninth overall.”

“We had set our sights on a top five finish, but our start made that an impossibility,” said Kennedy. “The combination of nerves and a very unique/challenging golf course hurt us from the start.”

The team included Ayden Nolan, Cuba City; Brandon Kreutz, Verona; Sam Schachte, Fitchburg; Ben Rader, Muskego; and Aryn Lochen, Bangor. Rader, the team’s number four player, was the team low on round one and the number five player, Lochen, was low on round two. Rader finished 37th overall, while Schachte was 41st overall. Nolan finished 42nd overall, while Kreutz and Lochen tied for 45th overall.

All Southwest Tech golfers finished in the top half of the field despite the slow start. “I am very proud of how they dug deep and continued to battle for the entire four days of the tournament,” said Kennedy.
