Golf Team’s Depth Fuels Strong Season
Preparing for Regional Competition in May
Fennimore -
The Southwest Wisconsin Technical College golf team wrapped up its fall season Oct. 16 with growing confidence and something head coach and Golf Course Management Instructor Scott Kennedy believes could make the team especially dangerous when competition resumes in the spring: depth. “This is not the best team we’ve ever had, but it’s the deepest team we’ve ever had,” he said.

That depth became apparent as the season progressed. Southwest Tech opened its schedule with a weather-shortened tournament, finishing seventh out of 18 teams. Kennedy said the Chargers were playing much better in the second round and were positioned to move into the top four before play was cut short. He attributed some of the early struggles to nerves from a group with several first-year players.
The improvement came quickly. Against College of DuPage, Kennedy split his golfers into two squads, with one tying DuPage and the other finishing third. He said a combined Southwest Tech lineup would have won the competition.
Southwest Tech also turned in an impressive performance against Minnesota State. One Chargers squad tied Minnesota State with a score of 321, while another shot 306. Kennedy said the team’s best combined lineup would have posted a 296.
The Chargers were led throughout the season by Ben Thill of Cuba City, Ben Sabel of Hartford and Brady Mack of Lancaster, who established themselves as the team’s top three golfers.

With regionals scheduled for the first week of May, competition for spots in the lineup is expected to remain intense. The team will spend the winter using golf simulators and following the University of Nebraska baseball weight-training program as players prepare for the spring.
Kennedy said the program also has five promising recruits preparing to join an already deep roster, creating optimism that Southwest Tech can continue building its golf program.
For now, the competition within the program may be just as important as the competition outside it.
“The two best teams in our region are in this building,” Kennedy said.
The regional tournament is scheduled for the first week of May, with the winning team and individual medalists advancing to the national tournament in Chautauqua, New York, during the first week of June.
