Graphic and Web Design students shine at Portfolio Show (with video)

Fennimore -

Graphic and Web Design students at Southwest Wisconsin Technical College displayed their work during the annual portfolio show recently. The event was the culmination of the second-year students’ work since they arrived on campus. The students work on setting up their portfolio projects throughout their last semester.

The projects the students display cover a wide range. “There’s probably about nine students that you would see a branding project, which is really great,” said Erin Kerkhoff, Graphic and Web Design instructor and marketing specialist. “They’ve got everything from a logo, all the way up to packaging and a product guide, even an app design that goes along with that. It’s really a great portfolio piece for them.”

“All the projects, if you were to go through the students’ (work), might be a little bit different, but a few things that you might see could be something from their Photoshop class, something from their Digital Marketing class, their web classes or WordPress classes,” said Katie Anderson, Graphic and Web Design instructor.

All the students have made significant progress during their time on campus. “It’s so cool seeing where they started in their first semester and where they end up here in their fourth semester,” said Anderson.

In addition to their classroom work, the Graphic and Web Design students have options outside of their traditional college work, as well. “We have some really great work-based learning happening in the marketing department, where students, right away in their first semester get to work on some projects, and that is really setting that foundation,” said Kerkhoff.

Examples of those work-based learning projects include billboard designs that are utilized by the marketing department, and t-shirt designs that end up being sold in the campus bookstore.

“It’s a great program for hands-on learning,” said Anderson. “We’re always doing something new, and we’re trying to break boundaries of creativity and just bring projects to the classroom that excite students.”
