The Southwest Wisconsin Technical College men’s golf team is swinging high after capturing first place in the season finale, capping off a strong fall campaign that sets the stage for regional and national competition in 2026.

Led by Head Coach and Golf Course Management Instructor Scott Kennedy, the Chargers finished tied for first place at the Wolfpack Challenge in Madison, Wisconsin, competing against several Division II programs loaded with scholarship players. The victory marked a steady climb from the start of the season, when the team placed 18th at the Highland 36 Invitational in Freeport, Illinois.

“Our players really started trusting the process,” said Kennedy. “They began to build game plans for each course and eliminated some of those big numbers on holes. They’re playing much smarter now.”

The team’s consistency paid off at the Madison event, where Southwest Tech shot a combined 306, tying powerhouse College of DuPage (New York). “Our team goal every time we play is 300,” explained Kennedy. “Four guys shooting 75 or better will almost always put us in contention. We were right there.”

Despite losing several top players from last year’s ninth-place national finish, this season’s roster has shown both depth and adaptability. Two returning players entered the season expected to lead the lineup but have since been overtaken by newer teammates. “That’s been one of the pleasant surprises,” said Kennedy. “Everyone’s stepping up.”

The Chargers will resume play in spring at the NJCAA Region 13 Championship, likely held in Minnesota. The top team and the medalist from each region earn berths to the NJCAA National Championship, scheduled for early June in Chautauqua, New York.

Kennedy believes his squad is capable of advancing, again. “If we show up and play well, we can win,” he said. “We’ve got the talent to compete at that level.”

Between now and then, the team will host its annual Kennedy Cup, a fun internal event pitting first-year students against second-years in a Ryder Cup-style format. Kennedy also hopes to organize a spring fundraising tournament to help offset rising travel and competition costs. “We’re going in the right direction,” said Kennedy. “This group has the drive to get back to nationals and finish even higher.”
