New IT-Software Developer program launches this fall
Fennimore -
Southwest Wisconsin Technical College will launch a new IT – Software Developer associate degree program this fall, expanding opportunities for students seeking high-demand technology careers across a wide range of industries.
The two-year program is designed to prepare students for entry-level software developer roles by building a strong foundation in coding, problem solving and modern development practices. Courses will be offered in an online format that allows students to attend class live with their instructor, providing real-time interaction, instruction and support while offering the flexibility many learners need.
“Software developers are needed in far more places than people often realize,” said Kris Wubben, executive dean. “Schools, hospitals, manufacturers, financial institutions and many other organizations rely on software developers every day. This isn’t limited to working for a single type of tech company.”
Southwest Tech worked closely with regional employers while shaping the curriculum to ensure the program reflects real-world needs. Local businesses, including Belcan in Platteville, Wisconsin, provided feedback on the skills graduates need to succeed in today’s workforce.
A key feature of the new program is the intentional integration of artificial intelligence (AI) tools throughout coursework. Rather than replacing foundational coding skills, AI will be used to enhance learning and reflect how software development is evolving in the workplace. Students will learn how to build AI agents that are aligned with business goals and infrastructure. “Employers told us that students still need to understand how code works at its core,” said Wubben. “AI is becoming a powerful tool that helps developers work more efficiently, but it doesn’t replace the need for people who can write, review and understand that code. We’ve built AI into individual classes to make this one of the most forward-thinking programs we can offer.”
The program is designed for recent high school graduates as well as adults looking to change careers. Students who enjoy problem solving, analytical thinking, puzzles and technology – and who are curious and adaptable – are well suited for software development careers.
Graduates will be prepared for entry-level positions with opportunities to grow on the job, gain experience and pursue additional education if they choose. Many professionals in the field continue their education while advancing in their careers.
While the program will primarily be delivered online, Southwest Tech is also developing on-campus resources, including a computer lab, for students who prefer to work on campus or collaborate in person.
“As Southwest Tech continues to expand the use of AI across programs, software development will be a cornerstone of that effort,” said Wubben. “This program gives students a place to start and the skills to adapt as technology continues to change.”
Enrollment is now open for the fall term. More information is available at swtc.edu/itsoftware.
