Student-built Duplex Extends Campus Housing

Fennimore -

Building Trades-Carpentry students at Southwest Wisconsin Technical College celebrated the completion of a new duplex during an open house held May 6, marking the culmination of months of hands-on learning and teamwork.

The duplex, constructed during the 2025-26 academic year, adds eight new bedrooms to Southwest Tech’s student housing inventory, while providing students with real-world experience in nearly every aspect of residential construction.

According to Building Trades-Carpentry Instructor Andy Reynolds, favorable weather and a collaborative learning environment helped make this year’s project a success. “We had really good weather throughout much of the project, which helped keep everything on schedule,” he said. “Most importantly, every student was involved. Nobody was standing back watching. They were actively participating in every phase of the build.”

Students gained experience in framing, roofing, drywall installation, trim work, ceramic tile installation and other finish carpentry skills. They also worked alongside industry partners throughout the project, including flooring and countertop contractors. Students visited a countertop manufacturing facility and toured a truss manufacturing company to gain additional insight into the construction process. “The more exposure students have to the industry, the better,” Reynolds said. “They were able to see products being made, help install them and understand how all the pieces come together.”

The project was completed without any significant injuries, continuing a strong safety record for the program.

Ryan Rands, president of Southwest Tech’s Real Estate Foundation, said the duplex reflects the college’s commitment to experiential learning. “Technical education is all about learning by doing,” he said. “There’s nothing better than giving students the opportunity to complete a real project that will serve future students. It’s a tremendous learning experience.”

The Real Estate Foundation helps fund student housing projects, which are then leased to students. Revenue generated from the housing supports future projects and investments that benefit students.

Rands also noted the value of Southwest Tech’s student housing, which offers spacious living accommodations directly on campus.

Building Trades-Carpentry Instructor Tim Hoffman praised the students’ work ethic and adaptability throughout the year. “We had a good class this year,” he said. “They worked hard, stayed on schedule and were eager to learn. Every student finds different parts of the project they enjoy, and they get experience from rough construction all the way through the finished product.”

Details about the next project, which will begin this fall, will be announced soon.
