College Level Courses While in High School

Start College Now allows students who are high school juniors or seniors the opportunity to take college courses at Wisconsin Technical Colleges during the regular academic year while also completing high school.

This program is designed to offer courses the high school does not have or cannot offer to a student who wants to go above and beyond in a subject area. One benefit of this program is the dual enrollment component. The course(s) the student takes gives them both high school credit toward graduation as well as college credit to take with them as they continue their educational journey.

  • Eligibility
  • The Start College Now program is available to public high school students in grades 11 and 12 who meet the following requirements:

    • Have completed 10th grade.
    • Are in good academic standing and have an acceptable disciplinary record.
    • Apply to their local school board by March 1st for the fall semester and October 1st for the spring semester.
  • Determining High School Credit, Number of Allowable Credits, and Course Comparability
  • The school board determines whether a technical college course is eligible for high school credit, the amount of high school credit to be awarded, the total number of credits to which the student may enroll over the two-year period, and whether the course is comparable to one offered at the high school.

  • Payment and Tuition Fees
  • The school district will pay the technical college for tuition, course fees, and books for technical college courses approved for high school credit that are not comparable to courses offered at the high school. The district may require that books be returned to the school district at the end of the course.

  • Transportation Costs
  • The student is responsible for transportation costs to attend courses held on the college campus or other location.

  • Students with a Disability
  • Students with a disability are encouraged to participate in the Start College Now program. The school board, however, may refuse to permit a student with a disability to attend a technical college if it would impose an undue financial burden on the school district.

  • Appeals
  • A student may appeal the school district's decision about awarding of high school credit or comparability of the course to the State Superintendent of Public Instruction within 30 days of receiving notification of non-approval from the school district.
